The 5-minute Quick Guide to Being Happy At Work

Work.

Let’s face it – work is an essential part of our lives. Whether it’s a necessary endeavour in order to provide for ourselves and those under our care, or an occupation to keep idleness at bay, we cannot deny that we all spend the greater part of our lives pursuing at least one job.

With all the economic challenges and prevailing situations around the world, the idea of finding happiness at work would seem like a ridiculous one to many – yet why spend so much time in a place where you’re not happy – only to make a living?

Here’s a quick list of some of the first things you can start doing today to gain happiness at work.

  1. Be grateful for your work – Next time you’re feeling the blues about your work, take a moment to think about the fact that out there there are thousands of people who would be grateful to have your job. Cast your mind to those who are willing to work but are unable due to illness, physical disability or other constraints. This helps put your daily hustle into sharp perspective.
  2. Stay positive – Let’s face it – being with so many people in a workplace on a daily basis will not be a easy task. There will be issues, disagreements and differences in opinion. However, determine today that no matter what you face, you will not allow negative thoughts hold you back. Negativity will only serve to draw you back both professionally and personally (we don’t want any of that!)
  3. Focus on the bigger picture – Work is not meant to be an end in itself, but a means to an end. Therefore do not work as if life would be nothing without the job. Take time off, give yourself a break. Think about your overall life goals. Who are you planning to become? What do you aim to achieve in 1 year? 3 years? 5 years? How does your job fit into the overall purpose of your life? What other life-enhancing activities are you involved with apart from work? This adds more meaning to the daily hustle.
  4. Go on vacation – We all know vacation is a time to recharge and relax, and it has been scientifically proven that time away from work does wonders to productivity. Vacation does not necessarily mean an expensive trip abroad – even a day at home relaxing and not doing work-related activities can go a very long way.
